Back to Analog a workshop in English
Surely you can’t buy film anymore, can you? Yes, you can. Analog photography is far from dead—yes, you can still buy film. In fact, film photography has been enjoying a strong resurgence in recent years. Many companies are producing new films, and in some cases even developing new analog cameras. Whether you'redrawn to the unique aesthetic, the hands-on process, or the slower, more deliberate approach, analog photography continues to attract both newcomers and experiencedphotographers alike.
Why choose analog photography today? Despite the dominance of digital technology, film photography offers a unique creative approach and a tactile experience that
continues to inspire many photographers. We will begin with the fundamentals of photography: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.You will learn how cameras and lenses work, how to control depth of field, and how to create pleasing bokeh. We will also cover how to load film into different types of cameras—including 35mm and medium-format systems. An important part of the course is learning to see: understanding composition and applying the most important rules of visual design. You will practice evaluating variouslighting situations, such as hard and soft light, side light, and backlight. Exposure will be another key topic. We will look at the Sunny 16 rule, useful smartphoneapps, and several kinds of analog light meters. You will also learn what push and pull processing means, how it works, and why photographers use these techniques. In addition, we will explore different film types and formats, discuss where to buy film today, and look at magazines dedicated to analog photography. Inspiring photographers
will be presented as examples, with references to recommended YouTube videos and podcasts. The course will include a one- or two-day photowalk to put everything into practice. We
will also offer a brief outlook on film development and making prints. A small exhibition ofthe images created during the course could provide a wonderful conclusion. Please bring your own analog camera with a lens, as well as a suitable roll of film to the course. If needed, the film can be provided by the instructor for an additional fee. There is
also the option to borrow an analog camera for the duration of the workshop. Basic photographic knowledge is helpful but absolutely not required. Everyone is creative!
